On 22 October 2017, a national census will take place in Peru during which there will be a curfew during the census from 8am to 5pm. Tourist services such as hotels and restaurants should continue to function as normal; if you’re travelling to Peru or are in Peru on that date, you can transit freely during the curfew carrying your passport unless you are a permanent resident. If you are a permanent resident in Peru, you should stay at your residence during the census for registration.

Summary & Terrorism section – presidential elections will take place across Somaliland on 13 November 2017; on 14 October 2017 a large truck bomb exploded in central Mogadishu (Hodan District). This was Somalia’s deadliest ever terror attack with over 300 hundred killed and hundreds more injured.

Natural Disasters section (Volcanoes) – on 4 October 2017, the summit of Cotopaxi volcano was re-opened after more than two years of restrictions following the August 2015 eruption. You should monitor official sources of information closely before considering a climb.

Following unrest and violence in the Mount Mulanje area, there are reports of tensions and unrest spreading to rural parts and township areas of Blantyre, Zomba and Nsanje districts. On 19 October 2017, there are also reports of unrest and disturbances on the Chileka Road which is the main route to the airport from Blantyre; you should exercise extreme caution in these areas, especially after dark, avoid any demonstrations or large groups of people and follow local security advice

Further demonstrations are likely to take place in Barcelona and other areas of the Catalonia region. They may occur with little or no warning and even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can escalate and turn confrontational. You should exercise caution if you’re in the vicinity. Demonstrations may also cause some disruption and delays to transport services.

There has been an outbreak of legionnaires’ disease in Mallorca; you should follow the advice of the National Travel Health Network and Centre.

There are regular protest marches and strike related demonstrations across South Africa, which can turn violent. Such marches and demonstrations can occur anywhere in South Africa, sometimes at short notice; you should avoid areas where demonstrations and marches are taking place, especially universities and government buildings; don’t attempt to cross protester roadblocks as this could provoke a violent reaction; you should monitor local and social media for updates.

Summary and Safety & Security section (East and north east India) - the strike in the Darjeeling Hills, during which shops and hotels were closed and public services suspended, ended on 26 September after three months; however, incidents of violent protest continue; if you’re travelling in, or through, either the Darjeeling hills, Sikkim or the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, follow the advice of the local authorities, monitor local media and keep in touch with your travel company.
