Travel Safety Round-Up: 21/8/2017

 

 

We were all shocked by terrorism in Barcelona, but the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued a number of other updates in the past week - and not all of them made the news.

Summary and Terrorism – You should be particularly vigilant at this time following the Lebanese Army's announcement on 19 August that it has launched an operation to remove Daesh extremists from Lebanon's north east region. Daesh and other extremists may attempt retaliatory attacks throughout Lebanon.

On 12 August 2017, one woman died and around 35 others were injured in Charlottesville, VA, when a car was driven into a group of protesters who were opposing a white supremacist rally against the removal of confederate monuments; further protests and counter-protests are expected in the coming weeks; you should monitor local media reports and follow the advice given by local security authorities. 

 Democratic Republic of the Congo

Protests may occur in Kinshasa and surrounding areas on Monday 21 August; you should avoid areas where demonstrations may take place and monitor local media and this advice for updates.

 Saudi Arabia

Pilgrimage and Local Laws and Customs sections - updated 24-hour emergency hotline number for the 2017 Hajj; binoculars should not be brought into Saudi Arabia and may be confiscated at the port of entry; in 2018, the holy month of Ramadan is expected to start on 15 May and finish on 14 June.

 Nicaragua

Entry requirements section - there have been recent changes to the policy on entry at the Nicaraguan border, affecting some visitors to Nicaragua. For further information, check with your travel company or the Nicaraguan immigration authorities, either via their website or by contacting your nearest Nicaraguan embassy.

Safety and security and Money sections - link to the International Civil Aviation Organisation audit for implementation of safety oversight in Belarus; you no longer need to present your passport for foreign currency exchange; you should only exchange foreign currency at government-licensed booths; other small editorial amendments throughout.

Entry requirements section - Mozambique has recently introduced the possibility for tourists to buy visas on arrival. This should be considered an exception, not standard practice. If you're travelling from a country where there is Mozambican diplomatic or consular representation (such as the UK), you should continue to apply for a visa before travelling.

Safety and security section and summary - large demonstrations are planned in Bamako for several days from Wednesday 16 August 2017; other demonstrations may be called with little or no notice; a significant security presence and traffic diversions are expected; you should remain vigilant, avoid all demonstrations and monitor local media.

 Philippines

Health section and summary - an outbreak of Avian Influenza (bird flu) in farm birds has been confirmed in San Luis, Pampanga province. A controlled zone is currently in place and all vehicles will be sprayed with disinfectant on departure.

 Bangladesh

Heavy monsoon rains continue to affect the northern and central regions of Bangladesh (including Sylhet region, Dinajpur and Rangpur) leading to disruption of train services and road travel; if you're travelling to an affected part of the country, monitor local and international weather updates and follow the advice of local authorities and your travel company.
