Travel Alert 5/12/2016

72dpi - shutterstock_182593169We're in the final stretch of 2016!

Are you getting ready to do some festive travelling? Wherever you go, we'll help to ensure that you're well-informed and make safety a priority.

Thailand

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) reports that Thai security authorities had disrupted the planning of acts of terrorism in Bangkok in October. This follows a series of bomb blasts in August which targeted popular tourist areas.

Thai authorities note that significant dates and holidays may be targeted, and media coverage has shown increased security at airports and major landmarks to improve the safety of visitors and locals.

Be on the alert when travelling anywhere in Thailand, and pay attention to local news reports - especially over the holiday season.

Indonesia

Large demonstrations have taken place in Jakarta, and while these have mostly been peaceful, it's a good idea to be cautious and check routes and destinations before you travel.

200 people were arrested following a West Papuan nationalist rally on Thursday 1 December, while a separate demonstration on Friday 2 December drew around 200,000 people, in protest against the city's governor. This was the second large protest against the governor, and there are reports of increased tension in the city.

An estimated 30 000 people countered Friday's demonstrations yesterday (Sunday 4 December) with a rally calling for tolerance and unity.

Europol Report

The Times and Daily Mail were among news sources that covered a report by Europol this weekend, which warned of "several dozen" Isis operatives being moved into Europe to carry out terrorist attacks.

The report said that “France remains high on the target list for IS aggression in the EU, but so too do Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK."

We believe that while it's clear that there is a threat of terrorism, the threat level is not high enough to warrant staying home. We do need to be prepared though - not scared - and it's always a good idea to plan ahead and ensure that you have appropriate travel insurance to cover you in case of an incident.

When you're travelling or at home, avoid disorganised crowds and report any suspicious items or activities to authorities.

Zika Virus

Take care when visiting affected areas.

The WHO has re-classified Zika and it is no longer considered an emergency, but it is still present and poses serious health risks to unborn babies.

Actor Tony Gardner has told journalists that he contracted the virus while filming in the Caribbean, and is one of approximately 200 Brits who have been affected after visiting the area.

The best protection is to cover up exposed skin and use a good mosquito repellant, so remember to apply it regularly if you visit an affected area.

Increased Security

The FCO has warned travellers to expect increased security when travelling in a number of European countries over the festive season.

The specific alerts include Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark and Belgium, however it's quite likely that there will be increased security wherever you go around the Christmas and New Year period.

Allow extra time for travel, check-in and security to ensure that you don't get stuck in queues and miss your flight or train. As always, be vigilant and ensure that you have the appropriate travel insurance for a worry-free holiday.
