Travel Alert: 3 October

Have we mentioned how happy it makes us to have no acts of terrorism to report on a Monday morning?

There are still political and weather-related warnings though, and as always, it's important to be alert and informed at all times.

Being prepared (not scared) means we must continue to look out for suspicious items and activities, and always have a "Plan B" in place for emergencies when we travel for greater peace of mind.

TRAVEL SAFETY: INDIA

FCO Advice

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) reports that tensions between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over Cauvery River water sharing continue.

"If you’re in or travelling through Karnataka or Tamil Nadu you should be vigilant, avoid protests, monitor local media and follow the advice of the local authorities and your travel company."

Durga Puja Festival

The "Durga Puja" Festival begins in Bengal on 8 October. If you're attending, the FCO advises that it will be extremely crowded, so take care and follow the advice of local authorities.

Advice Against Travel

FCO advice against travel, or against all but essential travel, remains in place for the following areas:

  • Immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan (other than Wagah)
  • Manipur
  • Jammu and Kashmir - with the exception of travel within the city of Jammu, travel by air to Jammu, and travel within the region of Ladakh
  • Srinagar, and travel between Jammu and Srinagar on the national highway

Remember that travelling to an area for which the FCO has advised against travel, or against all but essential travel, makes most travel insurance invalid.

HURRICANE MATTHEW

Jamaica and Haiti on alert

Tropical Storm Matthew reached hurricane levels last week and over the weekend, and is now affecting Jamaica. Thye BBC reports today that flooding is already blocking roads in Kingston, and Haiti expects to be more seriously affected, with 64cm (25 inches) of rain forecast.

A number of flights to and from Kingston airport have been cancelled. If you're scheduled to travel to or through the region, check with your airline or tour operator.

This is a category 4 hurricane, and has been called "one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent years."

The FCO has also issued warnings for Curacao, Venezuela, Cuba, Aruba, Bonaure/St Eustatius/Saba, Turks & Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas. If you are scheduled to travel anywhere in the vicinity of a predicted tropical storm or cyclone, keep a close eye on local reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Flghts have resumed in Saint Lucia but local authorities are still advising caution if you're in the area.

Did you know that like terrorism, natural catastrophes are often excluded from standard travel insurance policies? Read your policy wording carefully, and know exactly what you're covered for. Contact us for more information.

UPDATE: DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

According to the FCO's website, security in the DRC remains uncertain, following recent political protests.

You should follow travel advice and monitor local media for updates.
