Travel Alert: 30 August 2016

72dpi - shutterstock_308596403We hope you had a great bank holiday! Whether you’re back at work today or still enjoying some time off, make your week safer with the latest international updates.

At home or away on a trip, be prepared – not scared. Be aware of what’s going on around you, report any suspicious items, and keep up to date with the latest news and information to make every journey safer.

When we refer to FCO advice against travel, this means that the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued advice against all travel, or against all but essential travel, to a particular area or destination. In either case, it’s not a good idea to go there!

France

Calais Security Warnings

Be alert and take special care if you're driving in the Calais area - and avoid driving at night if possible. Human trafficking is a danger here and gangs are known to place obstacles in the road between midnight and 6am, forcing vehicles to stop.

Mont Blanc Snow Conditions

Unstable snow conditions have been reported in the Alps. The season is expected to end early with extremely dangerous conditions following hot days and freezing nights. If you're in the Alps or planning to travel there, please check with your transport and accommodation providers and follow their safety advice.

Brazil

The Olympic Games may be over but the Paralympics are scheduled to begin soon! Anyone planning to travel to Brazil should be aware of the current political situation and take special care.

Political demonstrations are likely, with suspended President Dilma Rousseff facing the final stages of her impeachment trial. Some news sources are reporting the possibility of a coup at this time.

Keep a close watch on the news and FCO advice in case of any political violence, and follow any instructions by local authorities to ensure your safety.

Italy

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck central Italy during the early hours of 24 August. If you’re in the affected area, you should follow the advice of the local authorities.

Civil Protection in Italy have activated an international hotline +39 06 828 888 50 for information. Within Italy you can also call 8008 40840 or 808 555 for the dedicated Lazio line.

Please check reports for any areas that you plan to visit for local safety information, and details of road closures.

Iraq

Somewhere most of us would avoid… The FCO has now extended advice against travel to the entire country.

Anyone currently in Iraq is advised to avoid banks, shopping malls and restaurants.

NB: Safe Journey (and most other travel insurance) can't provide cover for Iraq or anywhere else to which the FCO advises against travel. For more information on Safe Journey and the cover available, please read our FAQs.

Thailand

Following terrorism earlier in August, the threat level remains high. Follow the instructions of authorities and be alert at all times, as the FCO considers further incidents to be possible.

USA

A tropical storm is expected in coastal areas of North Carolina from today (30 August) and there are warnings of strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding.

Singapore

August has seen the first reported cases of locally transmitted Zika virus in Singapore. If you’re pregnant or planning to get pregnant, please speak to a health care professional before travelling to Singapore.

Venezuela

“Major political protests” are expected on 1 September. The FCO recommends remaining vigilant and “limit your movements in central Caracas and on routes in and out of Caracas (including to and from Maiquietía International Airport)”

These details were correct at the time of publication but as we know all too well, can change at any time. If we haven’t covered the area you’re travelling to, please check with the FCO and your travel provider.

It’s important to check the FCO’s website for updates before you book and before you travel, and ensure that you have the appropriate travel insurance for your entire trip to make every journey as safe as possible.
