Cote d'Ivoire

On 15 May 2017 several roads around military bases in Abidjan are blocked and shots have been heard; you should avoid the affected areas; the road through Bouake is currently blocked.

 Greece

Greece’s two largest public and private labour unions, GSEE and ADEDY, will go on a 24 hour strike on Wednesday 17 May 2017; public transport and other public services may be affected.

 Tajikistan

During April/May 2017 there were clashes between the Taliban and Afghan government forces in north-east Afghanistan close to the border with Tajikistan; check local advice before travelling to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast as the area may be closed to visitors at short notice;

Natural disasters section - there’s been an increase in the number of earthquakes in Tajikistan during 2016 and 2017; most are small but affect remote areas of the country, particularly the east in Badakhshan province; in late spring and summer Tajikistan is prone to seasonal flooding and mudslides caused by melting glaciers.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Health section – isolated outbreaks of Ebola virus disease have occurred occasionally in the DRC, often in remote areas; in May 2017, an outbreak of ebola was confirmed in Likati, Bas-Uele Province, northern DRC.

Local elections are due to be held on 14 May and 14 June 2017; there will be border closures and transport will be restricted; rallies and protests may take place in the lead up to, during and after elections; you should take care in public places where people gather, and exercise a heightened level of vigilance.

On 12 May 2017, military protests resumed in Bouake, Abidjan, Odienne, Man and Korhogo; you should avoid military barracks, military installations, large crowds and demonstrations; remain vigilant, monitor local media and follow instructions given by local police and security personnel.

 Philippines

In May 2017, the Philippines authorities reported that they had received unsubstantiated but credible information that the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf may be about to conduct kidnaps in the Sulu Sea, including around the islands of the Sulu archipelago (Philippines) and the seas/islands off the east coast of Sabah (Malaysia); any vessels sailing in the area could be targeted; you should carefully consider travel plans and be especially vigilant at this time.

Portugal

There have been reports of an increase in holidaymakers being encouraged to submit a claim for personal injury if they have experienced gastric illness during their stay; you can find more information about the action you can take if you have suffered a personal injury on the Citizens Advice website; you should only consider pursuing a complaint or claim if you have genuinely suffered from injury or illness; if you make a false or fraudulent claim, you may face legal proceedings in the UK or Portugal.

Elections will be held in late June/early July 2017; there’s an increased chance of civil unrest around the country particularly in the Highlands and Port Moresby; you should exercise a high degree of caution in the run up to the elections.

Presidential elections will take place on 19 May 2017, with a possible subsequent second round of voting a week later; while the Majles (parliament) elections passed peacefully in February 2016, demonstrations are typically heavily policed, with security forces deployed in large numbers.

 Nigeria

Reports received that Boko Haram is actively planning to kidnap western foreign workers in Bama Local Government Area of Borno state, along the Kumshe-Banki axis. Potential risk of terrorist kidnapping in areas where there is a Boko Haram presence. As well as North East Nigeria, this is believed to include some Northern and Middle Belt states, such as Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Niger and Adamawa states. Exercise vigilance in crowded public places including bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping mall, markets, places of worship, transport hubs and camps for displaced persons.

 Philippines

On 9 May 2017, the US Embassy in Manila advised its citizens it had received “credible information that terrorist groups may be planning to conduct kidnapping operations targeting foreign nationals in the areas of Palawan Province, Philippines, to include Puerto Princesa City, and the areas surrounding Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park”; you should carefully consider travel plans, and exercise heightened vigilance in these areas.

Entry requirements section (Visas) – if you plan to work, or stay for a longer period in Costa Rica then multiple exit and entry isn’t an approved alternative to obtaining the relevant visa for your circumstances; you should check the requirements with the Costa Rican authorities.
