Terrorism Travel Insurance and Business Travel

Your Duty as an Employer

International travel is a regular and essential activity for so many businesses today, and employees’ safety during these trips is of paramount importance.  Changing geopolitical climates make terrorism a valid concern for any traveller, and risk management specialists advise that this possibility must be protected against as an employer’s Duty of Care.

Whether your business travel is arranged in-house or through a dedicated agent, most travel insurance does not fully cover terrorism, but adding a Safe Journey policy costs very little and is simple to add on. Single Trip options are available, but for frequent flyers the Annual Multi-Trip policy (£14.99 for a single traveller) is ideal.

Safe Journey would ensure that in the event of an act of terror, your employees are covered for items often excluded by standard business and leisure travel insurance, such as:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Evacuation
  • Cancellation or curtailment if the attack takes place within 40 miles of their booked accommodation
  • Emergency temporary accommodation if your accommodation is within 1 mile of the incident
  • Medical repatriation
  • Death and permanent disablement
  • Travel delays
  • Personal effects
  • Withdrawal of services

While tour operators will assist with accommodation and alternate travel arrangements, other cover would depend on specific travel insurance policies and their inclusions/exclusions.

The FCO provides Exceptional Assistance Measures (EAM) under extreme circumstances when an act of terrorism is declared, and only if no other financial alternatives are available. We believe it’s reasonable to assume that a business sending employees abroad would be considered able to provide financial assistance, so it’s absolutely imperative to ensure that anyone travelling has comprehensive travel insurance that includes terrorism, or your employees could be left high and dry and your business faced with soaring expenses.

Safe Journey provides every policy holder with 24/7 emergency assistance, ensuring that any requirements are handled quickly and effectively, and that personal and company finances are protected. The new question facing employers with travel requirements is: can duty of care to employees or your business be fulfilled without Safe Journey?
