Staying Home For Christmas?

Last week’s attack at London Bridge shook us all, but in just a few days the beautiful memorials, vigils and messages of support and strength have eclipsed the terror and hatred and shown just how resilient we Brits are.

The holiday lights are a sparkling reminder of how much we have to treasure here at home, and they’re a message to terrorists too: we won’t be terrified or live in fear but we will be alert and prepared.

We talk about holidays abroad a lot – they are so much fun after all, filled with sights to see, fascinating cultures and history, tantalising food, and awesome adventures – but there’s plenty of that right here too within easy reach and without endless airport queues.

Just like attractions in Europe, our own markets, museums and festivals are taking serious security precautions too.

Friday’s attack may have made some people nervous about booking a trip to London or any of other major cities over the festive season, but it doesn’t have to be a gamble.

We fully intend to carry on with Christmas outings and activities while being alert and aware, and we still don’t believe staying home is the answer. As we said before, Brits are standing up and refusing to let terror take over, and we’re so proud of that.

Protecting your Christmas adventures

Safe Journey helps us to plan trips in the UK with even more confidence. As long as you have at least one night’s accommodation booked, it can cover your local trip – and that includes travel, accommodation, and pre-booked tickets to shows, events or attractions. If there’s an act of terrorism within 40 miles, up to 6 weeks pre-trip, and you’re disinclined to travel, you can make that decision and get your money back, simple as that. Get the full Ts+Cs here and find out how more peace of mind can add to your festive fun.

Enjoying London

London goes all-out to make Christmas truly spectacular. From the buzz of Winter Wonderland to the amazing Christmas light trails at Kew, Eltham Palace and Syon Park, there’s plenty of magic that ticks off top safety tips such as no vehicle access, security checks at the entrance, and security personnel posted along the routes.

Further Afield – Markets and More

Our MD Kate Huet visited Edinburgh last week and absolutely loved it – especially the city’s magical Christmas market that rivals many in Germany, France and beyond. “We really don’t need to travel to Europe to enjoy these festive markets anymore,” she confirms, “We have so much to enjoy right here!”

Other much-loved Christmas markets within easy reach include Birmingham (we confirmed in a previous travel alert that their security was getting a serious boost this season) and the markets in Bath, Leeds and Manchester rank among the top ten, according to Visit England. There are themed Christmas markets too – we love the sound of the Dickensian market in Wetherby, near Leeds.

We hope your festive season is off to a great start and we’d love to hear about your adventures! Let us know where you’ve been, and where you’ve noticed great safety and security measures.
