Safe Journey terrorism travel insurance was launched in May 2016, and what a year it has been.
Terrorism is in the news all too frequently, and has become a critical aspect of planning - from travel choices to presidential campaigns. We don’t believe it should be ignored, but we’re determined to help travellers manage their risk and refuse to stay home.
We’re proud to have provided countless travellers with extra cover and greater peace of mind while keeping the policy extremely cost-effective (still less than £5 per person for a single trip of up to 8 days!) and Safe Journey remains the most comprehensive policy of its kind in the UK.
The policy has proven invaluable to travellers whose plans were affected by terrorism – in particular, policy holders who were planning to visit Berlin just before Christmas 2016 and those who had booked a holiday in Turkey for January 2017. Safe Journey gave them the freedom to choose when terrorism affected their destinations after they had booked and paid: they were able to cancel flights and hotels, and recovered their hard-earned money!
Safe Journey has shown that it’s a simple, cost-effective way for anyone to top up their peace of mind with an easy, click-through online platform. Customers range in age from 16 to 98 and they’re a combination of business and leisure travellers – this really is a great option for everyone to fill the gap in their travel insurance cover.
During the past 12 months, there have been 25 acts of terrorism in Europe alone, resulting in:
- 147 deaths
- 664 injuries
- Thousands indirectly affected
During the same year, Safe Journey
- Provided extra cover and peace of mind to thousands of people
- Sent out 50+ travel alerts
- Was listed on price comparison websites - they recognise the need for terrorism travel insurance! It’s also available direct from www.safe-journey.com, or through your broker
- Remained the only comprehensive terrorism travel insurance policy available in the UK
The number of terrorism incidents is unfortunately not showing any signs of decreasing, and “lone wolf” attacks are making these incidents less predictable. Many have targeted popular destinations such as Paris, Brussels, and Berlin, and terrorism recently struck even closer to home in Westminster.
PeaceTech Lab reported that a total of 436 attacks took place worldwide between 1 January and 11 May 2017 alone, and highlighted the spread of terrorism into Europe and North Africa – including once-popular destinations such as Turkey and Egypt.
Trips to Turkey are in fact the largest group in the Safe Journey policy holders’ list of destinations. The top 10 are:
- United Arab Emirates
Still Standing Out
Safe Journey is still the only UK travel insurance policy that provides cover for cancellation due to terrorism – also known as disinclination to travel. It applies if an act of terrorism takes place within 40 miles of your booked route or accommodation, up to 6 weeks before your departure.
We don’t believe in staying home in fear, but given the changing times we live in, we do believe it’s important to have the right to choose not to go if terrorism takes place close to where you’re going.
Safe Journey fills a critical gap in travel insurance, allowing people whose destinations are affected by terrorism to choose not to go, and re-allocate their holiday budget to a safer location.
Making Journeys Safer in the Future
We have seen changes in the way terrorism operates, such as an increase in “lone wolf” attacks, vehicle attacks, and increased targeting of the public, and it’s now clear that governments are making plans to improve safety.
Projects such as a transparent wall around the Eiffel Tower and heightened security at London museums and galleries are a reminder that terrorism is a reality, but they also demonstrate that something is being done. It may take time, but we mustn’t lose hope, and in the meantime, we should all be prepared and take reasonable precautions – including financial protection. When that protection costs less than £5 per person for up to 8 days, can you afford not to have it? For even more cost effectiveness, have a look at an annual multi-trip policy… you won’t regret it!
We will continue to provide financial protection for travellers in case they’re affected directly or indirectly by acts of terrorism, and we’re committed to keeping our finger on the pulse and introducing new products that meet the needs of our changing world.
Thank you for your support over the past year, and we wish you many more safe journeys.
