It Can't Happen To Me... Can It?

72dpi - shutterstock_317373431Recent research conducted by our parent company, International Travel and Healthcare (ITHC) with YouGov, produced some fascinating insights into travellers’ perceptions regarding terrorism and the need for comprehensive terrorism cover when travelling. Read all about those results here.

Another trend that came up in the research was that younger people are travelling without any travel insurance at all, and that’s quite a big concern!

43% of full time students age 18+ who were surveyed said that they never purchased any travel insurance at all. That’s almost half! While we understand that students want to save as many pennies as possible, not having appropriate travel insurance can end up costing them (or their families) a lot more.

Never Assume

A decent travel insurance policy doesn’t have to cost the earth, but it can save thousands of ££££. If you don’t have dependants, funeral cover may not be at the top of your priority list, but what about medical treatment for a broken arm, or the cost of cancelling a trip if the area becomes unsafe?

Many people assume that their hotels and airlines will provide refunds if a trip has to be cancelled, but they don’t have to. Unless you book a package holiday through a tour operator, you could be on your own.

Regarding medical treatment, even a few stitches or a plaster cast can be expensive in a foreign country, and without the appropriate cover, you would probably have to find a way to pay up front for any treatment. Not a fun way to spend your holiday.

We have also discovered that many people assume the UK Government would pay for medical repatriation if they were injured in an act of terrorism – and no doubt this misconception applies to other cases of injury too. The reality is that Government can only assist if the situation is declared to be an emergency following terrorism… The Foreign and Commonwealth Office urge all travellers to purchase appropriate travel insurance.

Costs vs. What it could cost

The cost of a travel insurance policy may set you back a few beers, but in the greater scheme of things, the protection it provides will be worth it – as long as you read your policy wording and know exactly what cover is provided.

Specialist terrorism travel insurance can be added to any policy, and that cost starts at less than a couple of beers - from as little as £4.96 for a single trip of up to 8 days! That covers cancellation, curtailment, delays, loss of personal items, medical repatriation, emergency medical treatment, and even those things that we believe can never happen to us – death and disablement – if there’s an act of terrorism.
