Glass Wall To Be Built Around Eiffel Tower

French authorities have announced plans for an 8ft reinforced glass wall around the Paris landmark, aimed at protecting visitors from potential acts of terrorism.

The bullet-proof wall will cordon off the area surrounding the Eiffel Tower, as well as the ponds on either side of the tower. Entrance to the area will be via security gates only, and it’s likely that strict security checks will be put in place.

Impact of Terrorism

Paris has been on high alert since the November 2015 terrorist attack, and deputy mayor Jean-Francois Martins said in a press conference that, “Sadly, this risk has not gone away.” He assured journalists, however, that the plans were not for a wall, but rather an “aesthetic perimeter” which will enable travellers to enjoy the iconic structure.

The glass wall is expected to cost approximately £17 million, and will be constructed as part of a planned upgrade to the area. A £215-million project is set to revitalise the Eiffel Tower area over the next 15 years, aimed at efficiency and less queuing, among other visitor-friendly objectives.

Protecting Landmarks

The Eiffel Tower, along with many other tourist attractions and landmarks, had set up vehicle barriers in 2012 and again in 2015, and while these are an excellent way to prevent trucks or cars being driven into a crowd, they can’t stop someone on foot.

The reinforced glass wall is one of the first major projects to protect visitors to a specific attraction. Unnerving as it may be, to think we need this sort of protection, it is a step in the right direction.

Making popular attractions less accessible to potential attacks recognises that there’s a risk but provides greater peace of mind for everyone. That’s Safe Journey’s goal too, and we definitely won’t mind a bit of glass in the corner of a selfie if it means we can enjoy our visit feeling more secure!

Peace of Mind

Although there is a risk of terrorism which we must all recognise, we maintain that the risk is not high enough to make us stay home.

The majority of people affected by terrorism are affected indirectly – for example; wanting to change their mind at short notice about their travel plans and by transport delays. Safe Journey provides a top-up for any travel insurance policy – from only £4.96 per person – so you’ll have comprehensive cover, just in case terrorism affects you directly or indirectly.

Safe Journey even gives you the option to cancel your trip if an attack takes place within 40 miles of your accommodation, up to 6 weeks before your departure, so you can choose to cancel without facing financial consequences. This is just one of the ways in which Safe Journey can help – for full details of cover, terms, conditions and exclusions, please read our Policy Wording.
