Travel Safety Round-Up: 17/6/2019

From Argentina to Hong Kong, the last two weeks have been eventful to say the least. As always, we’ve put together the most relevant updates from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in a handy summary below.

While the FCO covers international events quite comprehensively, they don’t report on UK news or incidents. Have a look at our latest blog post for an update on the situation in the UK and overseas.

Since 18:30hrs power has been restored to 98.5% of the country, although the remaining 1.5% includes parts of Montevideo and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Since 7:06am on 16 June, there has been a nationwide power outage. Work is ongoing to restore power. There is likely to be some disruption to local travel and services.

Georgia 16/6/2019

There is a planned gathering in central Tbilisi for Sunday 16 June, likely to affect the area around Vera Park related to opposition to the forthcoming Tbilisi Pride events planned for 18 – 23 June.

There is the possibility of further unplanned demonstrations and counter-demonstrations over the next week in central Tbilisi, including near parliament, the State Chancellery, Freedom Square and Vera Park. Demonstrations in Tbilisi are usually well policed, but you should avoid large gatherings or demonstrations and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Hong Kong 15/6/2019

Updated information on political demonstrations – related to proposed changes to Hong Kong’s extradition laws; you should remain vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.

On 9 June there were large political demonstrations related to proposed changes to Hong Kong’s extradition laws; further demonstrations may take place in the coming weeks and you should be aware that such demonstrations can close off large sections of the city and affect public transport.

Safety and security section (Saudi Arabia-Yemen border) – On 12 June 2019, Abha International Airport was hit by a missile which resulted in 26 civilians being injured.

Local laws and customs section – on 22 May 2019 it became an offence punishable by a prison sentence and/or a fine to offer money, food or clothing to children living on the streets in Kampala.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Vayu is forecast to make landfall over Gujarat early on 13 June; you should monitor weather updates from the Indian Meteorological Department; for the latest guidance from local authorities and updates on the storm, call toll free emergency hotline (+011 1078)

Austria 11/6/2019

Some snow remains at high altitude; travellers visiting mountainous areas should exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Moldova 9/6/2019

In view of the unfolding political situation, you should remain alert to the possibility of protests and demonstrations. While these are currently peaceful, the situation could quickly change.

Be alert to the latest developments and take extra care. You should avoid large crowds, remain vigilant and follow local security advice.

India 6/6/2019

There has been a confirmed case of Nipah Virus in Kerala; travellers to the area are advised to monitor local media.

Lebanon 6/6/2019

Summary and Terrorism section – factual update on incident in Tripoli on 3 June; 3 Lebanese security personnel were killed by a suspected militant.

Sri Lanka 6/6/2019

Change to advice against travel; the FCO no longer advise against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka.

Sudan 5/6/2019

Change to advice against travel; the FCO now advise against all but essential travel to Khartoum and all other remaining areas of Sudan due to developments in the security and political situation.

If you’re in Sudan, you should consider carefully whether your need to remain is essential and consider leaving the country by commercial means; as of 5 June 2019, the decision was made to withdraw non-essential British Embassy staff and dependants from Sudan.
