Travel Safety Round-Up 1/8/2017

Over the past week, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued a number of important notifications – these include entry requirements (for USA and Laos), advice on fires and other natural catastrophes, and terrorism-related risks.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) recently held national elections. Post-election protests are worsening in Mount Hagen with reports of unrest and destruction of property. Mt Hagen Airport (Kagamuga) remains closed to all flights following protests and road blockages in the vicinity; wider protests may cause disruption to other transport services. You should continue to exercise a high degree of caution around any political events and follow the instructions of the local authorities.

Entry requirements section – UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) aren’t valid for entry into the United States or transit through the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme; if you’re planning to enter or transit through the US using an ETD you must apply for a visa from the nearest US embassy or consulate before you travel, or hold a valid lawful permanent resident card (often referred to as a ‘green card’), which you must have with you on arrival; you can leave the US using an ETD that has been issued in the United States.
