Mount Agung in East Bali has been erupting since 21 November 2017; on 27 November the authorities raised the alert level to level 4 (maximum); ash clouds have caused disruption to flights and airport closure in Bali and Lombok; you should contact your airline or travel agent before flying, monitor local media reports, follow the advice of the local authorities and stay outside of the exclusion zone.

Pakistan

There are currently reports of unrest in some cities in Pakistan, particularly Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi. There are unconfirmed reports of disruption at Islamabad International Airport. Due to the fluidity of the security situation British High Commission staff in Islamabad and Karachi have been told to limit their non-essential movements until the security situation becomes more clear. Travellers are advised to avoid all crowds and protests, and check with their travel company for potential disruption.

Zimbabwe

The inauguration of the new President of Zimbabwe took place at the National Stadium in Harare on 24 November. The inauguration, in addition to recent political developments in Zimbabwe, may result in more demonstrations and celebratory gatherings, especially in urban areas. These have so far been peaceful, but you should continue to exercise caution, avoiding large gatherings and any political demonstrations.

Estonia

Safety & security section (Road travel) – all pedestrians walking on the road at night time or in inadequate visibility are obliged to wear a safety reflector, otherwise fines may apply; reflectors are essential during winter months from October to March; road safety statistics updated with 2016 figures.

Kenya

Presidential elections took place on 26 October 2017; the inauguration of President Kenyatta will take place in the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on 28 November; political tensions are high and demonstrations and clashes are possible throughout the country, particularly in the western region; you should exercise caution and, where possible, avoid travelling around areas where demonstrations may take place.

Local law and customs section – if you’re a resident in Mongolia you should carry your registration card at all times. If you’re visiting Mongolia, and don’t have a registration card, you must carry your passport at all times – a photocopy isn’t sufficient.

Federal parliament and provincial assembly elections have been called in 2 phases on 26 November and 7 December 2017; in advance of the election period, border crossing points with India within Darchula and Baitidi districts will be closed for 72 hours from 24 to 26 November; you should continue to take care in public places and exercise a heightened level of vigilance.

There have been some large forest fires in central and northern Portugal this summer that have claimed lives. There has been very little rainfall this autumn and while the weather remains dry, there is always a risk of forest fires; you should check the situation with the local authorities if you’re considering travelling through woodland areas.

Cambodia

Safety and security section and summary – on 16 November 2017, Cambodia’s Supreme Court dissolved the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP); political tensions remain high; you should avoid protests and demonstrations, monitor local media and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Korea, DPR (North Korea)

Safety and security section (Air travel) – updated information on use of Air Koryo by Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) staff; FCO staff only use Air Koryo internationally in unforeseen or emergency situations where it’s not possible to use the other airline operating international flights from Pyongyang (Air China) or travel by rail; Air Koryo is used for travel within DPRK only where there is a strong operational need to do so.

Terrorism section – on 21 November 2017, a suicide bomber attacked a mosque during morning prayers in Mubi, Adamawa State, initial reports state that 50 people were killed and others injured.

Iceland

The Icelandic Met Office issued a yellow warning on 17 November 2017 for the Öræfajökull volcanic glacier in southeast Iceland, indicating higher than normal levels of volcanic activity; you should monitor the Icelandic Met Office for updates and follow the advice of the local authorities. In case of an emergency, the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management in Iceland will send out text messages to everyone situated in the area of Öræfajökull

Indonesia

The National Disaster Management Authority for Indonesia is reporting that Mount Agung in Bali is erupting; smoke is visible around 700m above the peak of the volcano; the Authority’s alert level remains unchanged at level 3 following a reduction from level 4 on 29 October 2017; you should continue to monitor local media reports, follow the advice of the local authorities and stay outside of the existing exclusion zone.

Turkmenistan

Safety and security section (Telephones) – the Russian mobile network provider MTS has suspended its mobile phone and internet service in Turkmenistan; the one remaining provider Altyn Asyr doesn’t offer a roaming service and the quality of the network is low.

Dominica

The FCO no longer advise against all but essential travel to Dominica; if you’re planning to travel to Dominica, you should be aware that the environment remains challenging; supply of electricity and mains water is still being restored outside the capital and some roads remain difficult to navigate safely; hotels have reopened but accommodation options remain limited; you should confirm your accommodation before you travel; Safety and security section – removal of information about a political demonstration in Roseau in February 2017.

On 20 November 2017, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the Loyalty islands in New Caledonia; you should monitor media for the latest developments and follow the advice of the local authorities, including any evacuation orders.
