There is an ongoing taxi strike in Goa. Travel in and around the State is affected, including on the road to the airport and around hotels and beaches. You should monitor the media for the latest information, and follow the instructions of the local authorities. Avoid large gatherings. Allow more time for travel and speak to your hotel, airline or travel company about getting to and from the airport.

Safety and security section (Rakhine state) – on 16 January 2018 protests related to an Arakan national event took place in Mrauk U in Central Rakhine in which 7 were killed and 30 civilians and police were injured.

Mexico

Health section – there has been an increase in reported cases of a food and water bug, cyclospora, affecting travellers returning from Mexico, you should follow the advice of the National Travel Health Network and Centre.

Entry requirements section (Departure tax) – you may need to pay a departure tax when leaving Mexico by air or land. The cost can vary and some airports or border crossings only accept payment in cash. Most airlines include the cost within the ticket price, but if you’re in doubt, check with your airline or tour operator.

Colombia

A temporary ceasefire between the Colombian Government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) ended on 9 January 2018; the ELN has since renewed its attacks on the Colombian state and further attacks could take place in areas where they are present

Thailand

Entry requirements section (Travelling with medicines) – some prescribed and over the counter medicines that are available in the UK are considered controlled substances in Thailand. Penalties for non-compliance with the regulations can be severe; you can find out more information by contacting the Royal Thai embassy.

Peru

During the Pope’s visit of 18 to 21 January 2018, access to Lima airport and other airports and roads where the Pope will be visiting will be restricted; you should plan your journey accordingly.

Mauritius

Tropical Cyclone Berguitta passed through Mauritius on 18 January and all cyclone warnings have been lifted. There has been serious flooding in some areas. Before making your journey you should contact your airline for the latest information on flight disruptions or cancellations.

Honduras

The opposition have called for nationwide protests and demonstrations on 20 and 21 January and also on 25, 26 and 27 January, the latter may target roads and airports; it’s likely transport will be significantly disrupted in the week leading up to the presidential inauguration on 27 January.

India

Due to preparations for a Republic Day fly-past performance, the Indian Air Force is closing airspace and more than 700 flights to and from New Delhi airport scheduled between 18 and 26 January are expected to be cancelled; for more information on how your travel may be affected, contact your airline or tour operator.

Philippines

Mayon volcano in Albay Province (Bicol region) is demonstrating low level activity and the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has issued a level 3 alert warning that a hazardous eruption is possible within day or weeks.

A “state of calamity” has been declared in Albay province and local residents have been evacuated; if you’re planning on travelling to the region you should monitor developments through the institute and follow the advice of the local authorities. An eruption may cause disruption to flights and you should check with your airline before travelling

Ukraine

Safety & security section – on 15 January 2018, there were at least 20 fatalities and 60 wounded after clashes around Mitiga airport in Tripoli, temporarily closing the airport.

Saudi Arabia

Bangladesh

Bishwa Ijtema, the world’s second largest congregation of Muslims, will be held in two phases from 12 to 14 January and 19 to 21 January 2018 beside the Turag River in Tongi (about 3km north of Dhaka). Temporary disruption to daily life in and around Dhaka may occur; if you’re travelling through Dhaka International airport during this time, you should allow extra time for your journey due to heavy traffic and extra security measures.

Pakistan

British High Commission staff have been advised to limit their movements to or within sectors F-8, F-9, G-8 and G-9 in Islamabad, including all major intersections within these areas, until further notice; if you’re in Islamabad, you’re advised to do likewise.
