Travel Safety Round-Up: 2/1/2018

Let’s make 2018 even safer! As always, we’ll help every week with a summary of  the latest travel safety information from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Since 28 December 2017 there have been widespread demonstrations across Iran. These protests remain unpredictable and there have been reports of violence and fatalities. You should remain vigilant and stay away from demonstrations, large crowds and areas where police and security forces are deployed.

Terrorism section – update to information on the threat from terrorism in Mali; terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Mali, including in the capital Bamako; you should be especially vigilant in places such as hotels, restaurants and places of worship

Turkey

Summary and Terrorism section – the Turkish authorities have announced restrictions on events in central districts of Istanbul over the New Year period for safety and security reasons; you should exercise caution if visiting major population centres, especially in places where foreigners gather.

India

Safety and security section (East and north-east India) and summary – removal of information about a 3 month-long strike in the Darjeeling hills in mid-2017; the Darjeeling hills and adjoining areas’ transport links are at times affected by sudden strikes called by local political parties; if you intend to visit the region, contact your local tour operator and hotel before travelling

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Latest update: Summary – there have been calls for protest marches across the DRC on Sunday 31 December 2017; you should remain vigilant and keep to a minimum any travel around Kinshasa and other large cities; travel to and from N’Djili airport may be disrupted as a result of any protests; monitor local media and this travel advice for any further updates

Nepal

Safety and security section (Road travel) – updated information on road conditions; the 2015 earthquakes affected many roads and reconstruction work is still ongoing, making road conditions worse.

Entry requirements section – you should get a visa before travelling; applications may take several weeks to process and should be made well in advance of travel; visas on arrival are issued at the discretion of the Djibouti immigration authorities; you must also have evidence of your onward journey.

Norway has extended the temporary border controls on its internal Schengen border until further notice.

Australia

On December 21 2017, 19 people were hospitalised in an incident involving a car colliding with pedestrians in the Central Business District (CBD) of Melbourne, some with serious injuries. The Australian police are treating this as a ‘deliberate act’ but have identified no links to terrorism at this stage and an investigation is ongoing.

France

Lebanon

Safety and security section (Crime) – in December 2017, the Lebanese Interior Minister advised people in Lebanon not to use Uber taxis, saying “I call in your name on all Lebanese not to use this Uber transport service because we do not consider it to be safe and there are taxi offices to use instead”. United Arab Emirates

Cameroon

The FCO advises against all but essential travel to Mamfe in the South West region.

There is currently a prolonged period of drought in the Western Cape; hotels and tourist accommodation may have drought water restrictions in place.

Egypt

Summary & Terrorism section – you should avoid crowded places and gatherings, for example, in or around religious sites and during religious festivals such as the month of Ramadan and the Christmas period up to 7 January (Coptic Christmas), when terrorist groups have sometimes called for attacks.

Thailand

Entry requirements section – enforcement of penalties for those who overstay their visa is strict and the conditions at the Immigration Detention Centre are harsh. Deportation by the Thai authorities can take a number of days to process.

Saudi Arabia

Pakistan

During holy periods/religious holidays, there’s an increased risk of targeted attacks on religious minorities; on 17 December 2017, an attack at the Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta killed nine and injured over 50 people. It’s possible that further Christian gatherings will be targeted in this way throughout the Christmas period; you should remain vigilant during this time.

On 17 December 2017, there were reports of renewed violence in recent weeks between Somalis and Oromos in east and west Harerge Zones, resulting in a number of deaths. Road travel may be disrupted; if you’re in the area, exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Safety & security section (Political situation) – in December 2017, a number of protests took place in universities across Ethiopia, with some reports of violence; you should exercise caution and avoid demonstrations.

Ecuador

Entry requirements section – as of February 2018, in principle all tourists will be required to hold a valid health insurance policy; local regulations for foreign visitors who overstay their visas are under review, with an overstaying fine set to be reinstated.

Thailand

Safety and security section and summary – due to roadworks causing congestion on the route from central Bangkok to Don Mueang airport, the Thai Immigration Bureau have advised travellers to allow more time than usual, around 3 hours, to reach the airport; the roadworks are estimated to last until September 2018

USA

At 7:40am (local time) a passenger train derailed and fell off a bridge onto Interstate 5 near DuPont, southwest of Tacoma, Washington State. Washington’s governor has declared a state of emergency in Pierce County, and emergency services remain at the scene. If driving, you are urged to avoid the area. A family reunification centre has been established at Dupont City Hall. 

Zimbabwe

Safety & security section (Road travel) – when driving, make sure you carry your personal documents with you.

Local law & customs – the use of a mobile phone without a hands-free device while driving is illegal and may result in a fine.

Entry requirements section – volunteering and missionary work over a period of 30 days is considered work and a temporary employment permit is required to engage in these activities while in Zimbabwe.
