Travel Safety Round-Up: 15/1/2018

 

Our weekly summary of travel alerts and updates issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) can help you to make informed decisions before you book a trip – or before you depart. Please remember that this information can change at any time though, so it’s always a good idea to check local news as well as the FCO pages for your specific route and destination.

Mayon volcano in Albay Province (Bicol region) is showing signs of imminent eruption. British nationals in the region are advised to monitor and respond to advice from the local authorities and to stay outside of the designated danger zones.

Lebanon

In the early afternoon of Sunday 14 January a small explosion took place near Al-Bustan Street in Saida (Sidon). At least one person was injured. You should avoid the area and follow the advice of the local security agencies.

Peru

On 14 January 2018 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Arequipa. Power cuts have been reported in Arequipa and Ica. There is no tsunami alert.

The Pope will visit Peru from 18 to 21 January 2018. Large numbers of people are expected to come to Peru during this period; travel and accommodation is likely to be very busy, so you should plan your journey accordingly; large crowds might attract pick pockets/minor criminality so you should be vigilant and take care of personal belongings at all times.

Venezuela

The Venezuelan authorities have closed the borders with Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao; there is currently no air or sea traffic between Venezuela and these islands; if you’re planning to travel on these routes, contact your tour operator for further advice; Safety and security section (Air travel) – online check-in does not exempt passengers from going through the airline’s check-in desk in person.

Protests in several towns and cities across Tunisia continue, with some reports of violence. Further demonstrations are planned for the coming days, including in Tunis on 12 and 13 January 2018; you should avoid protests and follow the instructions of the local authorities.

Senegal

On 7 January 2018, 13 Senegalese nationals were killed, and a further seven injured in an attack by gunmen in the Casamance region in the south of Senegal.

There have been sporadic protests against increases in the price of bread in a number of locations across Sudan, particularly in West Darfur, Wad Madani, the Omdurman and Bahri areas of Khartoum, and around the University of Khartoum. While these are not targeting the international community, tear gas and force have been used to subdue some protests; you should exercise vigilance and avoid large crowds or demonstrations.

A heavy snowstorm in the canton of Valais has caused the temporary suspension of the main road and rail links to and from the Zermatt area. Many ski areas and hiking routes have been temporarily closed while local authorities provide assistance and are clearing access routes; for further information, you should contact the local police in Zermatt
