The current forecast from Fiji’s Meteorological Service has Tropical Cyclone Gita passing to the south of Fiji’s main islands on 13 February. However, a tropical cyclone alert is in force for the Lao Group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected. Monitor local media, including local radio broadcasts, for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities. A severe weather warning is in effect for Tonga due to Tropical Cyclone Gita. Tropical Cyclone Gita is expected to make landfall on the afternoon of Monday 12th of February and strong winds and heavy rain are expected. It may cause flash flooding and landslides and could severely disrupt essential services. Monitor local media, including local radio broadcasts, for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities. We strongly advise that you do not venture outdoors and remain well away from the sea, due to the possibility of storm surge.

Carnival 2018 officially runs from 9 to 14 February, although there are events taking place beyond this period. 12 to 14 February are public holidays; be prepared for road closures and street parties (blocos) at any time of the day.

Trinidad and Tobago

Summary and Terrorism section – updated information and advice on the threat from terrorism in Trinidad and Tobago, reflecting an increased threat.

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Trinidad and Tobago; the Trinidad and Tobago authorities have arrested some individuals who planned to carry out attacks against Carnival on 12 and 13 February 2018; an attack is still possible; the Trinidad and Tobago government is increasing security measures for the Carnival; you should remain vigilant and avoid crowded places and large gatherings.

Sri Lanka

Safety & security section (Rail travel) – there have been a number of fatal accidents when visitors have hung out of the open doorways or windows of trains; you should remember that there is a very real risk of death or serious injury if you do not stay within the train carriage while the train is not stopped at a station. Visitors should also be aware that there are reports of theft of travellers’ personal belongings during train journeys, including theft of briefly unattended belongings, or pick pocketing. Take care of your possessions at all times.

Safety and security section (Demonstrations) – demonstrations are planned for 9 February 2018. To coincide with the seventh anniversary of the 2011 unrest on 14 February, demonstrations have been called in a number of villages between 13 February and 16 February; you should remain vigilant.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) have set up a 24 hour English language emergency hotline to assist foreigners affected by the earthquake of 6 February 2018.

On 6th February 2018 a 6.4 magnitude Earthquake struck near to the city of Hualien in eastern Taiwan. You should monitor alerts issued by the Central Weather Bureau and follow the advice of the local authorities.

From 8 February 2018, there could be protests and disruption following the verdict in a court case against Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Be vigilant at all times; if you see a demonstration or are in a situation that could turn dangerous, move to a safe place. Stay away from large gatherings and avoid political offices and rallies.

Entry requirements section (Visas) – if you have tourism status in Peru, you’ll need to apply online for a special permit in order to sign any type of contract, including car hire, holiday home rentals as well as business contracts. Equatorial Guinea

There’s no British Embassy in Malabo. Malabo is covered by the British High Commission in Yaoundé; however, there’s an Honorary Consul who can provide advice and assistance; Entry requirements section (Emergency travel documents) – Emergency travel documents (ETDs) aren’t valid for entry into Equatorial Guinea but are accepted for exit from Equatorial Guinea.

Pakistan

Busy public places and events are often targets, including transport areas, major international hotels, parks, shopping malls, religious sites, and the airport, along with government, military and law enforcement facilities.

Entry requirements section (Visas) – if you’re transiting through Saudi Arabia, you may need a transit visa if the connecting time between your flights is more than 12 hours. Once the ticket is issued, you should confirm with your airline or travel agency if you need a transit visa

Maldives

On 5 February the Maldives government declared a state of emergency; security forces have been deployed in the capital Malé in response to political developments; if you’re in Malé, you should exercise caution and avoid any protests or rallies; there are no reports that outlying islands, resorts or Malé International Airport are affected.
