To Travel Or Not To Travel?

Summer is here, but many people are wondering whether they should be going overseas for a summer holiday in light of the recent acts of terrorism, which have affected Europe and the UK.

The short answer? We don’t believe in staying home!

Counter-terrorism measures are becoming more effective

Last week, for example, attempted attacks were contained and dealt with swiftly in both Paris and Brussels. Security is being stepped up at home and abroad, with bag searches at theatres, museums and popular attractions, as well as an increased police presence on the streets.

You can book and still have a choice

With Safe Journey’s comprehensive terrorism travel insurance, you have the option to cancel – purely due to disinclination to travel – if there’s an act of terrorism anywhere within 40 miles of your booked route or destination, up to 6 weeks prior to your departure. It’s incredibly cost-effective and can save you thousands while giving you a whole lot more peace of mind.

Please note: cover for disinclination to travel is exceptionally rare – even if terrorism is covered, there will be limits and exclusions, so read your policy wording carefully!

The risk has only increased slightly

Nobody likes turning tragic acts of terrorism into statistics, but one must be practical… The number of people killed or injured in recent attacks is still extremely small compared to everyday risks such as vehicle accidents, and although there have been more incidents recently, the actual number of people killed or injured remains relatively small. This by no means makes the acts of terrorism less serious, but it does mean the risk to each of us personally may not be as great as some would have us believe.

An image was circulating on social media recently, supposedly created by the NHS, although the source and exact statistics used cannot be verified. Even if it isn’t 100% accurate, we believe it does provide a reasonable representation of the scale of different risks that we face every day, at home or when we travel, and gives some perspective on the real risks.

Whether we’re away travelling or at home, all these risks should be reduced as far as possible, so taking care of our health is still top of the list. As is making sure if we have pre-existing health conditions, that these are disclosed and fully covered on any travel insurance policy that we buy.

Terrorism is a reality, and we certainly don’t advise ignoring the risk, but we don’t believe the threat is great enough to warrant staying home. With information and financial protection, it’s a risk that can be managed and a worry that can be greatly decreased.
