At least five explosive devices have been found in Durban, South Africa since Thursday 5 July – fortunately there were no injuries as most of the devices did not detonate.
One device may have caused a fire, but this is still under investigation.
There have been no reports of suspected terrorism at this stage and it isn’t known what the motive behind the devices may have been, or whether there are more that have not yet been discovered in other parts of the city. If you are visiting Durban you should be cautious as the devices were found in shopping malls and under vehicles.
Another shopping mall search took place today (Monday 9 July) but the suspicious item was not an explosive device after all.
Wherever you are in the world, it’s so important to report suspicious items immediately – if something doesn’t seem right, it’s better to be over-cautious! If security personnel or police are evacuating an area such as a shopping mall, remain calm and follow their directions to help get everyone out of harm’s way as quickly as possible.
