Terrorism on the increase in Tunisia

Three Years of Safer Journeys

25 May marked three years since the official launch of Safe Journey.

In 2016 we were the only comprehensive terrorism travel insurance policy in the UK, and the only policy to cover disinclination to travel*. We’re pleased to say we seem to have started a trend, but there are still relatively few travel insurance policies that will cover terrorism and their terms & conditions vary. Most standard policies still limit or completely exclude this cover.

We’ve seen a lot over these past three years!

  • Brits aren’t letting fear get in the way of travel.
  • Terrorism has changed – in 2016 many attacks were co-ordinated by groups. More and more are now carried out by “lone wolf” attackers who act alone.
  • Those individual attackers tend to cause fewer deaths and injuries, but disruption is still significant.
  • A large number of travellers purchasing Safe Journey this year have been going to Turkey, Tunisia, Spain, and the USA.

We Love Travel

According to the Office of National Statistics:

  • Brits made 12.4 million overseas visits between December 2018 and February 2019, spending £7.6 billion!
  • In 2018 (January to December) there were a total of 71.7 million overseas visits.
  • The length of trips is decreasing slightly – Brits spent fewer nights away per trip in 2018 than they had in 2017.
  • Around 66% of Brits’ overseas trips were holidays in 2018 (as opposed to business travel or visiting friends and family).

How has terrorism affected our favourite destinations?

Although Spain, France and Italy are still the top 3 destinations, growing numbers of Brits are returning to old favourites like Turkey and Tunisia, even though there’s a higher risk of terrorism.

Thomas Cook reported recently that summer package tours to Tunisia had doubled compared to last year, and flight-only bookings were four times the number recorded in summer 2018. The company also noted that for summer 2019, Spain was its most popular destination, followed by Turkey – which accounted for a quarter of their flight-only bookings!

Terrorism targeting travel destinations

Just recently there was another attack in France – an explosion in Lyon. And only a few weeks ago, the world was rocked by bomb blasts in Sri Lanka – a country most travellers wouldn’t have thought of as a target before.

More than 177 attacks and attempted attacks in 2019 alone have targeted countries on many of our travel lists. These include Germany, Philippines, Turkey, Egypt, USA, Israel, Thailand, France, India, Spain, Nepal, Tunisia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

Stats for the above countries so far in 2019:

We don’t hear about most of these incidents on the news, and fortunately many don’t cause deaths or serious injuries, but they can affect hundreds or even thousands of people.

More trends we’ve noticed

  • UK and international security forces have undergone dramatic improvements over the past three years, and a number of attempted terrorist attacks have been prevented.
  • It’s very difficult to predict where in the world an attempt or attack will take place, especially with “lone wolf” attackers who are “inspired” by terrorist groups but aren’t tracked by authorities.
  • A lot of people are still travelling without any travel insurance at all – taking a potentially expensive risk.
  • Of those who do purchase travel insurance, many assume a standard policy will cover items such as terrorism and natural catastrophes, only to find out too late that these are limited or completely excluded.

Over the past three years we’re proud to have provided (and continue to provide) extra peace of mind to thousands of travellers at any given time. We’ve kept our rates extremely cost-effective, and our blog and Travel Alerts have become trusted sources of travel safety information.

Now more than ever, being prepared means knowing what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency, arming yourself with information, and having financial protection that you can count on in case you’re affected by an attack – directly or indirectly

Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we wish you many more safe journeys in the future.
