Sri Lanka – Change To Travel Advice

As of 16:00 on 25 April 2019, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) now advises against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka.

This means that most travel insurance policies (including ours) won’t cover travel in, to or through Sri Lanka until this status changes.

This change follows the Easter Sunday bombings and the “current evolving security situation.”

If you are scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka you can obtain a refund from your tour operator or travel provider, according to the EU Travel Directive.

You can also cancel your travel insurance policy according to the terms in your policy wording.

Plans are underway (by the FCO) to bring back British Nationals who were already in Sri Lanka at the time of the attacks. While some may have chosen to stay prior to the announcement of advice against all but essential travel, everyone must now follow the FCO’s directive and leave Sri Lanka.

Update

On 26 April the FCO advised that advice against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka “does not apply to flights transiting Colombo airport, providing that passengers remain airside in the airport.”
