Local law & customs section – some British nationals are being targeted for recruitment as drug couriers through email scams, where online fraudsters, through the promise of financial reward, ask people to travel to Peru where they are unexpectedly presented with some items/gifts to take with them out of the country; these items contain drugs and the person carrying them will face detention for drug trafficking; you are strongly advised to ignore this type of e-mail or online request.

Violent protests occurred in the centre of Asuncion from 31 March to 1 April 2017, resulting in injuries and loss of life; there are likely to be further protests in Asuncion and other towns and cities in the coming days; you should remain alert and avoid all protests and demonstrations.

On 9 April 2017, the US Embassy in Manila advised US citizens that it had received “unsubstantiated yet credible information that terrorist groups may attempt to conduct kidnappings in Central Visayas, which includes both Cebu and Bohol provinces; you should be especially vigilant in these areas.

Terrorism section – 2 police officers were shot dead in 2 separate incidents in Qatif in Eastern Province in March 2017; Saudi security forces have conducted a number of security operations against suspected terrorists in the area.

On 9 April (Palm Sunday), explosions occurred in four different locations in Tanta and Alexandria, including Mar Girgis Church in Tanta and St Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria. Many people were killed in these attacks. You should remain vigilant at all times and follow the advice of local security officials, including in and around religious sites and during religious festivals.

 On 7 April 2017, a truck was driven into people on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm, causing a number of fatalities and injuries. Police cordons have been lifted and the city centre is now accessible again, but be vigilant. If you’re concerned about relatives you can call 11414 and select 9.

Summary – there have been calls for protests in Kinshasa and other major cities in DRC from 10 April 2017; you should avoid travelling around Kinshasa and other large cities on days of protest, including travel to and from N’Djili airport; some local and international schools may be closed; you should monitor local media and this advice for further updates.

Safety and security section (Punjab) – on 5 April 2017, an explosion at Manawala Chowk, Badian Road, Lahore caused multiple casualties; you should be extra vigilant, and avoid demonstrations, large crowds and public events.

Safety and security section – Kohsar market (Islamabad) is no longer out of bounds to British High Commission staff.
