Looking Back: Louvre Attack 2017

We’ve been reviewing the past year’s travel safety, and this week we look back in greater detail at a specific incident: the machete attack at Paris’s Louvre on 3 February 2017.

The lone attacker could have injured many people and destroyed works of art, had it not been for the swift action of French soldiers who were on the scene. The area around the Louvre was cordoned off until it was confirmed that there was no further danger, but this attempted attack hit close to home for locals and visitors alike.

A school party was due to embark on a short cultural trip to France that week, including a highlight of a visit to the Louvre. After the attack, the school’s governors – and most likely parents too – were uncomfortable with the situation. They decided to change the itinerary significantly at short notice and gave the Louvre a wide berth, forfeiting their pre-paid tickets in the process.

They also faced additional costs of revising some of their transport and accommodation plans, and of finding alternatives to the Louvre and related activities. Even a short trip of 3 or 4 days can add up to a huge expense for the school and parents.

Choosing Not To Go

Many people assume that terrorism would be covered by their travel insurance policy and that these costs could be claimed back, but the reality is that many policies limit terrorism cover to medical emergencies, or exclude it entirely.

Safe Journey cover would have enabled the school to cancel the trip completely*, and each child’s place would have been refunded in full by a Safe Journey school policy.

Contact us today to arrange a Safe Journey policy for your school trip and see how cost-effective the extra peace of mind can be.

Trips Of All Shapes And Sizes

A couple who had booked a romantic luxury weekend in Paris and were set to depart just hours after the incident took place were also concerned about their safety visiting Paris so soon after the attack. As long as they had purchased their Safe Journey policy prior to the attack (on 2 Feb or before) they too would have been able to cancel*.

In this case, Safe Journey would have covered:

  • Flights (premium economy) and 5-star hotel (4 days) – £595.00pp
  • Prepaid theatre tickets – £80.00pp
  • Prepaid Louvre tickets – £13.24 pp

£688.24 pp

 – £100.00pp excess

= £1176.48 in total
