FAQs

No. This is an insurance policy which provides cover if you are financially impacted by an act of terrorism before you travel or whilst travelling.

An act of Terrorism means an act which either:

a) has been declared as an act of Terrorism by either the UK Government or the government of the country where the act occurred; or

b) where in the event of a delay in declaration by governments, acts which we believe should be covered under this policy, including but not limited to the use of force or violence, of any person or group(s) of persons, whether acting alone or on behalf of or in connection with any organisation(s) or government(s), committed for political, religious, ideological or ethnic purposes or reasons including the intention to influence any government and/or to put the public, or any section of the public, in fear for such purposes. Where we exercise this discretion we shall do so acting reasonably with the information available to us at the time.

Yes. We would advise you should always be comprehensively insured for any travel plans you may have. This policy will not cover you for anything other than terrorism.

You do not need to have an existing travel insurance policy to purchase Safe Journey, but you must be aware Safe Journey only provides cover if you and/or your travel arrangements are financially impacted by an act of terrorism.

You can buy Safe Journey by visiting http://www.safe-journey.com

If you have a travel insurance policy already, to understand whether you have any terrorism coverage please check the policy wording, specifically in the General Exclusions section, whether there is or is not cover for an act of terrorism.

If it is excluded, then you may not be covered although claims for medical expenses and/or personal accident (e.g. death or disablement) may be covered under your existing travel insurance policy.

However, there would be no cover under other sections of your existing travel insurance policy for an act of terrorism (e.g. cancellation, curtailment, personal possessions, withdrawal of services, travel delays or any other sections of cover).

The Safe Journey Policy is unique and will fill the gap that your cover has now and provide you with significant financial protection in the event of an act of terrorism that affects your travel arrangements.

Worldwide other than for travel to, or from, or through these countries; Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Sudan and North Korea. In addition to this, any country or area where the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all but essential travel or, against all travel. Your Safe Journey policy will provide no cover where the nature of your claim would be considered a prohibition for the insurer to settle a claim by law.

You can buy it online at http://www.safe-journey.com or you can ask your insurance broker to arrange this cover for you.

The following are all covered up to the amount of the sums insured shown per person, if your travel is affected by Terrorism:

Up to £1,000,000 for emergency medical treatment overseas, including transportation costs and returning you back to your home. In addition to this, it will cover evacuating you to a safe place and providing temporary accommodation if you are staying within 1 mile of where a terrorist incident occurs.

Up to £3,500 for funeral expenses (burial or cremation abroad or returned to your home country)

£25,000 in the event of death

£100,000 in the event you are permanently disabled

Up to £2,000 if you choose to cancel the trip you have booked. There are certain conditions that have to be met in order to make a claim for cancelling your booked travel:

  • The event occurs within 42 days of your booked trip, and

You need to only notify the claim within 30 days. Then you have up to 6 months to provide these documents. After 6 months if your documents have not been received your file will be closed and your right to claim withdrawn.

If the vouchers are valid for a reasonable period of time (e.g. 12 months) to allow the insured person to reasonably make other arrangements and use them then our answer would be No. If however, the vouchers were only valid for a few months, or specific dates and/or routes, then yes we would consider your claim.

Your main travel insurance will pay first, then any amount in excess of your main travel insurance sum insured of up to £1,000,000 would be covered by this policy.

Most travel policies exclude any coverage for terrorism but some may have an element of coverage for Medical Expenses and Personal Accident. Whereas this policy will cover you for Cancellation, Curtailment including Medical Expenses & Personal Accident and various other benefits. Please see the Table of Benefits in the Policy Wording for a full list. Where necessary we will work closely with the insurers of the main Travel policy and industry agreements are in place to both cover this and avoid delays.

Any act not declared as a terrorist act by the UK government or the government at your holiday destination.

Harming, or attempting to harm, someone or something, that is not explained by the above definition of terrorism would be considered a criminal act and not an act of terrorism.

We will have to wait until we have information we can rely upon, or the Government of the country involved or the UK Government confirm if the event is considered an act of terrorism. In the interim, anyone needing emergency medical attention will be treated as if it had been an act of terrorism and all assistance will be provided to those medically affected. Non urgent non-emergency claims will be held pending a decision, and then settlement will be made once a decision is made by the relevant Authorities.

It is our intention to provide cover wherever we can do so.  Unless it is clear that an incident was not an act of terrorism, we will assume that an act of terrorism had occurred and provide you with the benefits set out in the policy.   However, you should note that if it is later established that the incident was not an act of terrorism, we will be entitled to recover from you the cost of providing the policy benefits.  We will usually seek to do this by taking over your rights to make claims from other entities and insurance companies and seeking recovery from them.
