Recognising the need for specialist terrorism travel insurance
There has been a nine-fold increase in deaths due to terrorism since the beginning of the 21st Century, and while the likelihood of being killed or injured in a terrorist attack remains low (estimated at 1:9.3 million) ordinary people, tourism and transport are increasingly common targets.
UK residents take approximately 58 million overseas trips annually, but until now most have had only partial travel insurance cover for acts of terrorism, or none at all. In the months following attacks in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Sousse, and Paris, it became clear that specialist travel insurance was required for those directly and indirectly affected.
Brokers, travel agents, tour operators and price comparison websites alike are now able to offer their customers specialist terrorism travel insurance via International Travel and Healthcare’s (ITHC) Safe Journey policy. The first – and currently the only one of its kind in the UK – Safe Journey was developed in response to growing travel industry and consumer demand for greater financial peace of mind in a changing World.
Evolving Travel Insurance for a Changing World
Safe Journey has been created to protect those directly and indirectly affected by terrorism. While certain policies provide limited cover for claims such as emergency medical expenses or medical repatriation resulting from terrorism, the vast majority exclude cancellation and curtailment, personal effects, personal accident, withdrawal of services, and/or travel delays under those circumstances. Safe Journey does cover these – and cover for cancellation due to disinclination to travel is another first in the UK marketplace!
Disinclination has previously been uninsurable, but Safe Journey policy holders are covered for cancellation if an act of terrorism takes place within 40 miles of where they have booked their accommodation or the route they will be travelling through, up to 42 days prior to their scheduled departure. Curtailment will also be paid to policy holders staying within 40 miles of where terrorism occurs (at the time of the attack) and emergency temporary accommodation would be paid for those staying within 1 mile or in accommodation directly impacted by the incident.
Low Cost, High Value
Safe Journey provides greater freedom to plan ahead and book trips without fear of financial losses, which ITHC believes will benefit the travel industry significantly.
Examples of premium gross including IPT would include £4.96 per person for an 8-day single trip policy and £14.99 for an annual multi-trip policy, making peace of mind extremely affordable for all.
Safe Journey is an autonomous product which can be sold in conjunction with a traditional travel insurance policy, or can be sold separately to “upgrade” policies already purchased. Brokers can access Safe Journey via ITHC’s secure back office policy issuance system www.ithcos.com or by contacting ITHC directly for more information.
