Brits are looking for extra peace of mind…

More Safe Journey Terrorism Travel Insurance policies are being purchased for trips to Turkey than any other single destination right now, and that’s closely followed by Spain and the USA. We ask: does this actually reflect where the risk lies?

Perceptions of risk: more Brits purchased Safe Journey terrorism travel insurance for Turkey than for any other destination over the past 12 weeks.

What’s Really Going On?

It’s interesting to note that of the 31 acts of terrorism over the past 12 weeks (we exclude acts of war/ongoing conflict and insurgency) Saudi Arabia ranks No.1 and the UK, USA and Indonesia are joint 2nd. However, if you look at the numbers of people injured and killed the UK takes top position by a huge margin.

Some numbers need further consideration

Unfortunately, we can’t believe everything we read. For example, the Egyptian Government appears to prefer not ‘labelling’ attacks as terrorism and instead refers to “insurgency”. As a result, the countries in which it could be argued terrorism has taken place (see below) do not feature Egypt – attacks are not classified as terrorism, so they don’t show up. However, many of these attacks have involved tourists, so we will let you make up your own mind on this finer point of detail. There have been many acts of ‘insurgency’ in Egypt in this 12-week period.

What This Tells Us

  1. Travellers want peace of mind for local and international trips

Until the attacks in London and Manchester, insuring travel within the UK would not have made it into the top 10 destinations. In fact, the UK would have been in the bottom 10 out of the 100+ countries monitored for Single Trip policy destinations sold.

  1. Perceptions of the risk of terrorism are probably linked to media coverage

Turkey gets a lot of media coverage, for example, but did you know that most recent “acts of terrorism” in Turkey are actually insurgency, and these attacks target officials, police and military rather than the public?

Terrorism is still a risk – perhaps not as much of a risk for tourists as some may think – but attacks on political and other targets can affect travellers indirectly.

  1. This is where Brits are travelling

Managing Director, Kate Huet, points out that the large number of policies purchased for places like Spain, which hasn’t had any recent terrorism, recognises that this is where a large proportion of Brits choose to holiday.

We can see that travellers are becoming increasingly more aware of a general risk from terrorism and want to protect themselves financially – wherever they go.

It is also interesting to note that whilst standard travel insurance has the lowest uptake amongst 18-24 yr travellers, Safe Journey Terrorism Travel Insurance bucks this trend. This indicates that younger travellers are actually more risk-aware than we expect!

A few more points which we found interesting

  • Of Safe Journey policies purchased for the USA, high numbers were heading to either New York or Florida.
  • France and Italy have experienced the same number of attacks as Iran over the past 12 weeks
  • Average age of Safe Journey policy holders is 40 – our youngest policy holders are 16, and the oldest are in their late 90’s!
  • Most people still only buy travel insurance – including Safe Journey – a few days before they travel. It’s a last-minute consideration, and this could mean missing out on the cancellation cover offered by Safe Journey!

Safe Journey cover includes disinclination to travel (i.e. you can cancel) if there’s an act of terrorism within 40 miles of your destination at any time in the 6 weeks before your departure date.**

Making Every Journey Safer

Wherever you go, it’s always advisable to check the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Travel Advice website for your specific destination and read some local news. For the cost of a couple of coffees for a single trip policy – starting at £4.96 for up to 8 days cover, it’s also really easy to add extra peace of mind with comprehensive terrorism cover – just in case.
