The Safe Journey story so far…
Until comparatively recently terrorism was not a problem or major consideration for travellers. Travel insurance did not historically need to cover terrorism, and even today only a few travel insurance policies offer any cover for this risk.
Insurance for terrorism within a travel insurance policy is usually limited to providing medical care if you are injured directly as a result of terrorism. To put this into perspective, the chance of this happening is around 1:9,300,000 so not high enough to stop travelling or to expect travellers to want to change their plans.
We know that it is the indirect impact of terrorism that a traveller is far more likely to be exposed to, and it is the financial impact that is more often felt. The number of people who are indirectly affected by terrorist attacks is so much greater and the cost implications soon start to add up. Before Safe Journey was launched in late May 2016, there was no insurance that would cover these indirect financial eventualities.
After numerous terrorist attacks in 2014 and early 2015, we decided to start to effect a change in our industry, so we set out to provide the first comprehensive cover for terrorism – including cover for the indirect costs that travellers were being exposed to far more frequently.
It was an ambition that required determination, and after the attack in Sousse in June 2015 we knew we were considering something that was really, very much needed. Then followed Bangkok, Sharm el Sheik, Paris and Brussels; all major incidents and all targeted at travellers and holiday destinations. In the four weeks after our launch of this scheme, there were 7 terrorist attacks. They are sadly now part of the World that we live in.
